Spirit Airlines ceases operations, cancels all flights after failed bailout and fuel price surge

Spirit Airlines announced an immediate wind-down of operations on May 2, canceling all flights, after rescue talks with the Trump administration collapsed and jet fuel prices more than doubled during the two-month-old U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. The carrier, which had filed for bankruptcy twice in 2025, said it could not secure the hundreds of millions of dollars in additional liquidity needed to stay afloat. The shutdown is the first liquidation of a major U.S. airline in two decades and is expected to cost about 17,000 jobs.

Spirit Airlines announced an "orderly wind-down of operations" effective immediately on May 2, 2026, canceling all flights and telling passengers not to go to the airport, after rescue talks with the Trump administration collapsed and jet fuel prices more than doubled during the two-month-old U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

Spirit CEO Dave Davis said sustaining the business required "hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity that Spirit simply does not have and could not procure." The carrier, which had filed for bankruptcy twice in 2025, said it could not secure the financing needed to stay afloat after jet fuel prices climbed to about $4.51 a gallon by the end of April, more than double Spirit's 2026 forecast of $2.24 a gallon.

President Donald Trump proposed a $500 million financing package in exchange for warrants equivalent to 90% of Spirit's equity. Trump told reporters on May 1: "If we can help them, we will, but we have to come first." A Spirit board meeting ended without an agreement to rescue the company, a person close to the discussions told Reuters late on May 1.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told Reuters: "What would someone buy? If no one else wants to buy them, why would we buy them?" A creditor close to the deal said: "The Trump administration made an extraordinary effort to try and save Spirit, but you can't breathe life into a corpse."

The shutdown is the first liquidation of a major U.S. airline in two decades. Spirit accounted for 5% of U.S. flights at one point. The airline flew about 1.7 million U.S. domestic passengers in February 2026, with a 3.9% market share. Spirit had 4,119 domestic flights scheduled between May 1 and May 15, offering 809,638 seats, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. The airline employed about 11,000 people in 2024; the shutdown is expected to affect about 17,000 employees and contractors.

Spirit said refunds for tickets purchased by credit or debit card will be processed automatically. Compensation for voucher or points bookings will be determined through bankruptcy court. Major U.S. carriers including American Airlines, United Airlines, Frontier, JetBlue, and Southwest announced rescue fares for affected passengers.
